Film & TV Language: Cinematography analysis tasks

-Opening scene: Hunger games

1) Write an analysis of the cinematography in the opening sequence. Highlight your use of media language and try to cover camera shots, angles and movement using the terminology we have learned in lessons. How does the camerawork give the audience clues about the setting, narrative and character?

 -Shots:

The scene starts off with a power-point, government statement-like opening that consist of cold, clear-cut exposition that sets up the audience perception of the frigid world that they're introduced to and the following establishing scene of the film is of a late night show interview that seems to discuss a heavy topic such as a televised fight to the death with children, as an art or something righteous. The characters and setting and filled with flashy, bright colours and flamboyant, sophisticated dress that mirrors their status and the glamour of the world, there's many close-ups of their facial expression that highlight their apathetic natures. The scene then shifts to an establishing shot of the town of the protagonist, a dull, desaturated setting especially in comparison to the prior scene, as her little sister is screaming from a nightmare of a possible horrid future she may be resigned to in this unjust society. Similarly, their are close-ups to the protagonist and her younger sisters expressions but it's nothing but fear and anxiety as they embrace one another, ironically the games to bring them together, like what the men previously stated.

-Angle:

The first scene of the film consist of a neutral, eye-level shot angle, looking straight on to the two characters that simulates a realistic TV show feeling that creates a laughable imitation of intimacy. Now on the other hand, the shots with the protagonist are consistently filled with high angle shots that mostly centre and focus on the protagonists younger sister but create a perception of vulnerability and weakness framed by their social status that the protagonist very quickly breaks the prior perception of her strength, mimicking the deception and illusion of the prior shots.

Analyse the camera shot/angle in the image and what it communicates to the audience. Remember to highlight the media terminology you use.

The wide shot includes every person in the room, humanising them and including them at the same angle, size and lighting to reinforce how unimportant a symbol in in comparison to the community of people supporting and fighting on the front lines for a cause, literally or metaphorically. The angle adds to the intimate tone of the shot cultivated as the anxiety of the protagonist is being relieved through camaraderie and support of her people, further reinforced by the fact that the camera movement and space isn't so restricted and limited on her facial expressions and body language.
