-The Grand Budapest Hotel:

 


C-The costume of the character is not highlighted at all, except for the characters hat and glasses, that are reflecting some light, bringing attention to them. The use of enigma codes through the use of back lighting to create a contrasting silhouette shrouds the scene in mystery and adds to the suspense of the scene. The costume of the character that is shown connotes academia due to the glasses, professional hat and coat.

L-The contrasting lighting of the scene guides the audiences attention to the both the figure and the background, it raises question of who the character is, what they're motives are, what is the setting and overall adds to tension of the scene.

A-The actor is placed at the centre of the scene with a medium shot of him standing still and there is a use of action codes, the audience is made to believe that violence is coming due to the dark and de-saturated colouring of the scene and the fact that the character is looking straight at the camera. 

S-The background setting is highlighted in the scene and it seems to be an academic setting, supported by the characters costume. But the room that the character is in seems purposefully concealed by the camera angle, the enigma code builds further suspense and intrigue for the audience.


-Dead poets society opening scene:

C-The characters costumes are very professional uniforms which indicates to the audience that this private school has high standards and is a dignified establishment. The adults are all also wearing professional attire, telling the audience that they're a higher class of society.

L-The lighting is ambient and warm, the light diffuses from windows, small lamps and many candles that add to the cathedral-like atmosphere of the setting that highlights the schools values to the audience.

A-The wide ensemble cast of characters are grouped together as the hall is filled to the brim, the audience can infer the fact that this is a prestigious and competitive school to get into.

P-The banners the students are holding have the words ‘Tradition’ on them and it highlights the ideals of the school. The candle inform the audience of the time period of the film and antiquity of the school itself.

S-The school setting informs the audience that the ensemble cast of characters will consist of teenagers, likely with upper class and Christian ideals due to the fact that they're in a boarding school with peers that are depicted that way.


-The Godfather opening scene:


C-The character's costume is a suit, depicting to the audience that he is a man of wealth, business and class. This informs the audience that the genre may be crime, more specifically a white collar crime film. 

L-The lighting is sharp and is focusing on the characters face, its done to highlight his first piece of dialogue and the rest of the suit is in darkness, a clear enigma code to draw the audience in. The main character has back lighting highlighting his silhouette and leisurely posture, illustrating him as a character with status and power and further connoting crime.

A-The character is centre of the shot to draw the audience's attention to him but the camera slowly pans out to bring attention to the overall setting and the protagonist.

S-Its set in a personal office of sorts which supports the notion that it's a film of the crime genre and adds to the general suspense as the enigma code draws the audience in and makes them ask whose office this is and why the scene is set there.
